The metIS hub from Cap2020, a key technology used in the MAGDA project is being deployed in Martinique, with new applications beyond the MAGDA project. When developing this technology, Cap 2020, one of the MAGDA project partners wanted a versatile device, like a Swiss army knife of weather and plant sensors. This proved useful in the MAGDA project, for example, the Italian pilot site has metIS hubs deployed as plant sensors for crops in combination with regular weather stations for enhancing the forecast accuracy and validation. This caught the interest of banana producers in Martinique who wanted to renew their weather sensors network by progressively replacing the older weather stations with metIS hubs. These devices have been extensively tested against the tropical weather and ant invasions. The first two hubs have been put into operation in the last few weeks and many more will follow. Data will be used for pest modelling, disease management, and planification of harvest dates, mainly on banana crops.
